How to Choose GSM and Ply for Tissue Products

A decision framework for balancing feel, strength, conversion and target use.

Buyer perspective

This guide focuses on the information needed to compare and confirm supply. It does not replace the approved product specification or order documents.

01

GSM and ply describe different things

GSM describes the mass of paper per square metre. Ply describes how many tissue layers are combined in the intended construction. Neither field on its own confirms the final feel, strength or performance.

02

Start from the end use

The right combination depends on the target product, market position, material, embossing, sheet dimensions and converting process. A lightweight multi-ply construction can behave differently from a heavier single-ply sheet.

  • Required softness and bulk
  • Dry and wet strength expectations
  • Absorbency for towel applications
  • Sheet count, roll size or folded format
  • Machine compatibility and winding behavior
03

Use samples to confirm the brief

When performance or hand feel is important, compare a current sample or approved reference alongside the numerical specification. Linensoft can then coordinate paper-source options around the combined brief.
